Tiree's Sustainable Future

Ro-shealladh Sheasmhach do Thiriodh

Community-led Research Project, 2024

In my role as Community Projects Officer at Tiree Community Development Trust, I led on a Community Research Project looking at Climate Adaptation as part of the Highlands and Islands Community Climate Change Network (funded by The British Science Association, UK Research and Innovation and Science Ceilidh).

The project paired us with a researcher, Dr Leslie Mabon (Lecturer in Environmental Systems in the School of Engineering and Innovation at the Open University) to explore how climate change is affecting Tiree and what we can do about it.

We held focus groups, Climate Fresk workshops, a film screening and a community event to bring islanders of all ages together to begin the conversation.

Sustainability in Tiree extends beyond the environment - it includes challenges such as preserving Gaelic language and traditional crofting practices, which are at the heart of the island's cultural fabric. This publication outlines the discussions we had as a community and represents the beginning of a grassroots approach to climate adaptation in Tiree.

"From lost coastline to damaged infrastructure, Tiree residents have seen firsthand the impacts of climate change, and these will only increase. Adapting to these changes is daunting, but the community's knowledge, engagement and passion offer hope."
